The 304 vs. 316 decision comes down almost entirely to one alloying element: molybdenum, added in 316, which dramatically improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion. Galling is the failure mode buyers new to stainless fasteners most often encounter unexpectedly: stainless-on-stainless threads can gall (cold-weld and seize) during installation, especially with fine threads or dry (unlubricated) assembly, even though the same fastener geometry in plated steel would never have this problem. A thread lubricant or anti-seize compound, and running the fastener down at a moderate speed, both meaningfully reduce galling risk.

304 lacks the molybdenum that gives 316 its chloride resistance — coastal exposure calls for 316 specifically.
