The square neck under a carriage bolt's head is the whole point of the design: as the nut is tightened, the neck pulls itself into a matching square hole or embeds into timber, stopping the bolt from spinning even though there's nothing to hold a wrench against on top. That self-locking behavior is why carriage bolts remain the standard choice for one-person installation on decks, fences, and playground equipment, where a second wrench simply isn't practical.
